As a rhetoric and composition teacher, I am often tasked with ensuring that my students learn—practically—to write. Yet I believe that it is my responsibility to help my students become responsible, engaged citizens, too. It is important that students to bring their whole, authentic selves into my classroom, and so I design assignments and courses that allow them to explore who they are and what they believe—and also to challenge what they think, too, by asking them to work outside of their established comfort zones and collaborate with others. In this way, I ask my students not only to learn the course content, but to apply it in meaningful ways, increasing the likelihood that they will transfer what they have learned beyond the walls of my classroom, not only to other courses, but beyond the university as well.
